Term 2 2024 - Celebration Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
That’s a wrap for Term 2! We've had an action-packed final week at ADSS with Senior Sports Day, NAIDOC Day, and Celebrations of Learning. Week 10 is always a highlight as we celebrate our students' hard work throughout the term and engage them with highly motivating activities to finish on a high note!
Senior Sports Day was a tremendous success, and a huge congratulations goes to Sabre House for their victory! Special thanks to our PE teacher, Ange Wilson, for coordinating such a wonderful day. It was heartening to see so many parents out there supporting their children. Kudos to the adults who won the children vs. adults relay – a fantastic effort!
On Thursday, we celebrated NAIDOC Day with a range of enriching activities. Congratulations to Michael Hunter, who received the annual Karen Condon Deadly Award – an honour truly well-deserved. We were privileged to have the Condon family present the award in Karen's memory. Our Garringgam Dancers performed beautifully at the special assembly. A big thank you to Vicki Nilsen for her coordination and to all our special guests, including Michael Keys, Nadine Foley from Cultural Weave, Ipswich State High, and the Condon family, for making the day such a valuable learning experience for our students.
Looking ahead, next term, our students will commence learning the Respectful Relationships curriculum. This program, designed for Prep to Year 12, empowers young people to develop the skills they need to form respectful and ethical relationships, free of violence and gender inequality. As parents and carers, you play a crucial role in teaching your children the importance of respect and how to build the skills necessary for safe and healthy relationships. For more information, Respect Program.
As part of our strategic plan, we are in the process of updating our Student Code of Behaviour and refining several school processes. Our primary goal is to foster improved peer relationships and enhance student engagement in learning. In line with the latest research, we are implementing the Respectful Relationships curriculum to support these aims.
Next term, we will be sharing our plans during our Parent Rep sessions. Additionally, we are excited to announce that some of our classes will be piloting a 'reset station' in their classrooms. To support this initiative, we are seeking donations of 30-40cm cushions for these areas.
Your support and involvement are greatly appreciated as we work towards creating a positive and engaging learning environment for all our students.
I will be on long service leave for the first two weeks of next term. During my absence, Deidre Anderson will be the Acting Principal, and Deputy Principal Leisa Cave will be supporting Year 4. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Deidre if you have any concerns.
It’s been a significant term, and I know the children are ready for a well-deserved break. I hope you all enjoy a restful and rejuvenating holiday.
Warm regards,
Kelli Harvey
Principal
