Supporting Safe and Respectful Behaviour at School
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have given students three weeks to settle into school and their routines. As we move forward, we are reinforcing our school-wide behaviour expectation:
“We are safe when we keep our hands, feet, and objects to ourselves.”
Every child has the right to feel safe and secure at school. Physical aggression or fighting with the intent to cause another harm is not an appropriate way to express frustration. To support students in managing their emotions, they are being taught the PAUSE program, which helps them regulate their feelings, and they are also learning to use the Problem-Solving Wheel, which provides strategies for resolving conflicts in a positive manner. Our staff actively support and reinforce these approaches across the school.
At the beginning of the term, all families received information about these programs along with a copy of the updated Student Code of Conduct. Last year, we successfully implemented the Respectful Relationships curriculum throughout the school to further develop students’ skills in managing relationships and emotions appropriately. The updates and implementation of these programs were collaboratively carried out with our parents to reflect our community's expectations regarding appropriate behaviour.
As parents and educators, it is our responsibility to teach children right from wrong to ensure they grow into happy and successful adults. A simple way to explain this to your child is:
“If you feel like hurting someone, that is your body’s way of telling you that you need help from an adult.”
We understand that bullying and physical aggression are major concerns in our society. As a community, we must work together to teach our children that harming or abusing others is never an appropriate way to deal with frustration.
Our priority is to ensure that all students are learning in a safe and supportive environment.
Thank you for your ongoing support in reinforcing these expectations at home. Together, we can create a safe and respectful school environment for all students.
Warm regards,
Kelli Harvey
Principal
