Friday Flash Week 4 - 16th of May 2025
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
This week, there has been some media attention around student behaviour and communication between families and schools. At Amberley District State School, we are proud of the strong systems we have in place to support every student’s success—both academically and behaviourally.
For many years, our school has implemented Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) as our whole-school approach. PBL helps us create a safe, supportive learning environment by:
Clearly teaching students the behaviour we expect
Creating consistent rules and routines
Using a proactive and preventative approach
Monitoring behaviour data to provide the right support at the right time
Offering extra help for students who need it, including intensive support for a small number of children
Last year, we updated our PBL Matrix and Student Code of Conduct, and introduced the PAUSE Program, a whole-school social and emotional learning program that’s part of our Health curriculum. This program teaches children the essential skills they need to build positive learning behaviours, regulate emotions, and engage in respectful peer interactions. These documents are available on our school website.
Just like in any home, there are times when children don’t follow expectations. At ADSS, we have clear strategies in place to support students when this happens and to help them make better choices moving forward.
We are proud to share that in Semester 2, 2024 (this is updated at the end of each semester):
90% of our students achieved a C or above for behaviour
39% of students received an A
This year, our high expectations are being reinforced through Morning Circles, where we explicitly teach behaviour and social-emotional skills. Students also receive a ‘Good, Great, or Soaring’ tick in their diaries each day. This helps families stay informed and encourages positive conversations at home.
This week, the Department of Education released a new Parent and School Communication Guideline to support respectful and effective communication between families and schools. We will be adopting this statewide guideline, which aligns well with our current approach and strengthens our shared commitment to working together in the best interest of every child.
A copy of the guideline is attached for your reference.
Also next Friday is our annual Early Years Expo - see the flyer below!!!! It is always a wonderful morning for our littlest students.
Wishing all of our families a happy and safe Show Holiday!
